Matthew Crocker of Crocker Communications is on our email list. Crocker was kind enough to come to some of our early meetings last year. Crocker does a lot of work creating and maintaining community networks in Massachusetts and elsewhere.
We asked Matt about whether 5G technology would be an adequate substitute for a community network. Here is his reply:
5G is great for today’s bandwidth needs. ‘Fiber is forever’ and will always be capable of beating the performance of any wireless technology. Fiber is a long term (30 year) asset where 5G technology will only have a couple year lifespan before 6G comes out. With fiber you control your destiny with 5G you are relying on the cell carrier.
